York Open Data network sees York named amongst the best in the country

City of York Council has been named as one of the nation’s best local authorities for successfully opening data to residents and businesses.

The council was one of five local authorities to receive top marks from NESTA, an independent innovation charity, for its York Open Data platform, which has opened up data to residents and businesses across the city.

The website was launched in April 2015 and offers residents and businesses free access to a wealth of information about their city, to help to build new solutions to all kinds of challenges such as those around sustainability, transport, energy and community engagement.

The site has around 300 datasets which cover a diverse range of topics such as council and city performance, community assets and information on individual business sectors in York. New data is being published regularly from sectors and individual organisations across the city, building a rich picture of the city with information direct from the public, private and third sector’s organisations based in York.

York Open Data is run by City of York Council and was created as part of the council’s continued commitment to being accountable, efficient and effective through publicly sharing as much of the information it has access to as possible.

Councillor Chris Steward, Leader of City of York Council said: “It’s pleasing to see that York has been recognised as one of the most successful councils at releasing data so soon after the York Open Data website was launched. As a council we’re committed to publicly sharing data wherever possible and are aware of the need to keep expanding and improving the York Open Data platform so residents and businesses can access data easily and benefit further from the new website.”
