York Open Data turns 10!
In March 2025 York Open Data turns 10!
York Open Data’s journey began when the City of York Council took on an ambitious plan to publish a vast amount of the Council’s Open Data which was scattered across multiple sources and systems within a single platform available in the public domain. It was successfully launched on 24th March 2015 with around 250 initial datasets 10 years later it has 1329 covering a mixture of key performance information and other diverse data sets.
York open Data now offers a greater insight into the workings of the city than ever before by offering free access to a wealth of information about various aspects of York. It enhances transparency by hosting a wide range of data sets, including information on members’ allowances, travel expenses, payment to supplies, senior officers’ expenses and salaries, fraud, grants to voluntary organisations and more.
Open data is information that:
- is free to use for any legal purpose under the Open Government Licence
- contains no personal data and meets Data Protection Act legislation
- data is presented in various formats such as geospatial formats (previewed on a map) and table like formats (CSV and Excel files) that allow for easy filtering and analysis.
The aim of open data is to allow you to view information, and re-use it in useful ways which can help increase access to public services for everyone.
The Council aims to continue to publish as much non-personal data as possible, in an open, timely and re-usable format, to help residents and businesses build new products, understand challenges, and develop solutions in areas like sustainability, transport, energy and community engagement.
